6 reasons to watch “VIY: The Spirit of Evil” aside from a chance to win an iPhone 6

Halloween is just a couple of weeks from now and for sure you are already thinking of a scary movie where you’ll have a chance to hug or cling on your date especially during creepy scenes. Well, I have one “astig” recommendation which I saw last night at My Cinema, Greenbelt 3 during a special screening by Futuretainment, Inc.

I have six reasons for you to watch VIY: The Spirit of Evil and on top of them is a hair-raising news that you might end up owning a brand new iPhone 6 by just watching the film which will be shown in 3D in select theatres in Metro Manila, and in in 2D nationwide starting October 22.

1.  “VIY: The Spirit of Evil” is a hit dark fantasy film loosely based the story “Viy” by Nikolai Gogol, a legendary Russian poet. Gogol has been featured many times on Russian and Soviet postage stamps; he is also well represented on stamps worldwide. Several commemorative coins have been issued from Russia and the USSR. In 2009, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a commemorative coin dedicated to Gogol.  At least ten streets have been named after Gogol in various towns and cities and Russia.

2.  If you’re a big fan of the worldwide monster HBO hit series “Game of Thrones” and deeply missed just about everything about the said TV show, you’ll have at least Charles Dance who plays Tywin Lannister in GOT in an important role in VIY. Plus, shades of special effects, gore and brutality of GOT can be felt in the movie.  VIY was shot in Prague at the Gatteo, Barrandov, and Letnyany studios, world-renowned locations that are also called the "European Hollywood" and home to the production of many blockbusters such as Van Helsing, The Brothers Grimm, The Chronicles of Narnia, Casino Royale, Hellboy, and Blade.

3.  VIY is produced by Russian Film Group and Marins Group and is distributed internationally by Universal Pictures, one of Hollywood so-called “Big Six” film studios. Lead star Jason Flemyng, who played the role of “Master Scientist” Jonathan Green, has also appeared in some of recent Hollywood box-office hits like Transporter 2; Case of Benjamin Button; Clash of the Titans; Kick-Ass; and X-Men: First Class.

4.  VIY is the name of the dark and notorious monster responsible for the deaths of many village people in a sleepy 17th century Ukrainian village. It’s most terrifying ability is to murder and cut through the soul of any one with just the gaze of his many eyes. There is one very creepy sequence in the film where a number of terrifying monsters of all shapes and sizes appeared that made me blurt, “This is nightmare!”

5.  Jason Flemyng on VIY: “It's a classic story of redemption and of love and of adventure. “The special effects and the 3D is as good if not better as I've ever seen it, so the potential is limitless. I've made a hundred films now and five of them I love, and Viy is one of those five.”

6. The film became a certified hit when it was first released in Russia earlier this year. The first weekend take was $17 million, an all-time record for a Russian movie.

Now if I happen to convince you to watch VIY, hold on dearly to the tickets that you’ll purchase because they might be your only chance ever of owning an iPhone 6. Here’s how:

a. All viewers of the movie are qualified to join the promo.

b. Participants must write their name and signature on their movie ticket (the side where the movie title is visible), and then take a selfie with their movie ticket.

c.  Go to the movie’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/futuretainmentinc and they must like th page and click the Watch and Win iPhone 6 promo logo for the next step and complete details.

d. There will be 3 winners of an iPhone 6 unit each, which will be drawn on October 25, 28, and 31.

e. Winners will be announced via Futuretainment FB account, Instagram account (@futureupdate) and the registered mail. Participants can only win once during the entire promo.

If this stuff still can’t charm you to watch VIY, don’t let the monsters in the film (watch the trailer below) make you.

Santa Claus Trivia and a Christmas Giveaway

My Little Charlie with a gang of Santas
I saw Santas!

That was my son who screamed at me while pointing at the life-size Santa Claus statues standing in a display of a mall in Cubao during one of our recent Saturday family date.

This man is a head-turner. Whether you're a kid or an old folk, you can't understand why you feel like approaching him. There's really something special about Santa.

I would like to share some trivia I got from allthingschristmas.com about St. Nick that will make us understand in a way why the world love this man in red.

1. His origins appear to be in the 4th century when Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, in Turkey, was kind to children and legend has it that he threw gifts from a window to poor children.

2. As early as 1773 the name appeared in the American press as “St. A Claus,”, later becoming Santa Claus.

3. The author Washington Irving gave Americans their first detailed description of Saint Nicholas, describing him as “a chubby little man with a jolly smile, drawn by a team of reindeer.”

4. First seen in poetry in 1823, when Clement Clarke Moore made him even more famous with “The Night Before Christmas”, including the names of eight reindeer (not including Rudolf, who was to appear in 1939 as lead reindeer). This is one of the best loved and most re-told Christmas poems.

5. Historical letters from Santa, dating back to 1849, including well kept & interesting copies for the children of JRR Tolkein, are available both online and in print.

6. First pictures & publicity, illustrator Thomas Nast, who depicted a rotund Santa for Christmas issues of Harper’s magazine from the 1860s to the 1880s, including his toy making.

7. “Is there a Santa Claus” was the title of an editorial appearing in the September 21, 1897 edition of the New York Sun, ending up with the much publicised verdict, “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”

8. In 1930, an image of Santa was used by a well known drinks company in a Christmas advertising campaign-big, depicting his white beard, black boots and a big red coat. This is the image that we know and love of him today.

9. In 1939 Rudolf, the ninth reindeer, is introduced by writer Robert May. His “very shiny nose” achieves almost instant fame, through songs such as “Rudolf the Red nosed reindeer” and later, TV and movie appearances.

10. In 1999, image recorded by SETI, search for extra terrestrials monitoring, you can actually see an image of the old man himself.

Now, here's one good news to those who wants to be a Santa Claus for a day.  Electrolux Philippines is giving you a chance to win a gift for your loved ones this Christmas!

To join, visit www.electroluxman.com/santaforaday and send a letter to Electrolux containing no less than 500 words that answers the question, “What Electrolux appliance would you like to gift someone special this Christmas and why?” You can accompany your letter with a creative video or a photo. The complete list of appliances you can choose from is found on the contest website and includes a wide range of Electrolux appliances including washing machines, refrigerators, cooking appliances, air conditioners and small appliances.

NOTE: Please don't forget to indicate in the Referred by section the name of this blogger Richard Mamuyac so I can track the status of the entries by my followers.

All qualified entries will be judged and the beneficiaries of the 3 best entries will receive an Electrolux appliance.  The winner with the highest score will be given a chance to be a Santa for a Day as the Electrolux team will accompany him or her to personally deliver the prize to the nominated recipient. Deadline of submission of entries is on December 10. Share the love and make someone happy this Christmas season by nominating them in Electrolux’s Santa for a Day Contest!

Thor Viral Photos and your chance to win cool Thor shirts

UPDATES:  See the list of winners in the comment section of this post. Thanks to all who joined this mini contest. It was a Thor-ture reading all your humor. Thor-ture to my tummy because of the laughs and to my head because of jolt of migraine trying to decipher some of the entries. :)

UPDATES: Instead of the earlier announced hammer and nails set as prizes, I will be giving out three (3) cool shirts to the best comments on this post.  Prizes will be shipped to the winners (as long the delivery address is within the Philippines) And starting today, you may also post Thor humor lines, knock-knock jokes, etc. aside from Use Thor in a Sentence."  Please see full mechanics below. Extended until Thor-sday (August 2, 2012) ang pagsali!!!

Special thanks to Woman Avenue for the prizes!

Today is Thursday or should I say Thor's day (for more than a week now) with the sudden surge of Thor and Chris Hemsworth "enhanced" photos, memes and jokes online.

Posted on Mhel BlankPixels Ignacio's FB wall
At first, I was just kinda "liking" every Thor photo shared via Facebook then I started to post comments and the next thing I knew, I was making my own Thor pic.  Who says Loki is dead. He's probably just hiding somewhere in the disputed Scarborough Shoal since no one (yes, as in NO ONE, dear Chinese brothers) should be there until an agreement has been forged. Loki could have started this Thor thingie by creating an FB account and posing as somebody named Ashley or Kimmy and posted one of the photos circulating cyberspace today.

Now, here's some of the possible reasons how Thor became viral again after two months The Avengers hit the silver screen:

1.  Well, some guys could have gotten envy why Chris Hensworth can look good in long blonde hair and beard while carrying a 100-ton hammer. I tried pasting my face on his body via Adobe and I looked like a clown.

2.   This could be an indirect protest of  Tobey Maguire fans to Marvel who got a new Spider-Man in
Andrew Garfiled.  Why no Spidey spoof photos yet? Probably, they just hate to admit that Andrew is also amazing.

3. It's been raining whole week and we can't do anything but stay indoor. And what's the best way to kill time inside your room? Ruin somebody's life!

4.  Or simply, Chris Hemsworth might be Chuck Norris' long lost son to his Filipina girlfriend during the shoot of Missing In Action in Cavite a few decades ago.

Whatever the real reason behind this phenom, who cares!  Here's a compilation of  some Thor pics that I saw online along with a couple of works I did during that rainy Tuesday (could not say Thuesrday since it sounds Thursday). Also, I am having a mini Thor Hammer Time giveaway. Please see contest details below.

What's a Healthy Deal?

Health is wealth.

How many times have you encountered this saying?  Did you ever consider it as your life’s mantra? Or you just treat it the same way you do with classic phrases like “Time is Gold” or “Love is God?”

It’s kinda sad that sometime most people only get concern with their health when they have symptoms of an ailment or worse, already suffers from a disease.

Now here’s another motto that I’m sure would a ring a bell--- Prevention is the best cure.

I hate to admit it but I am one of those people who should be a little health conscious but would continue to live with the bahala na attitude. Bahala na if I get soaked wet under the rain… bahala na if I don’t exercise regularly… bahala na if I eat a lot of salty and fatty foods.

Then came a wake up call.  I got a news that a friend from high school was diagnosed with leukemia.  She’s just in her early 30’s and she’s a doctor.  It made me realize how life can be so short and that I am blessed to have a better health that I should maintain.  I should definitely take care of my body now.

Good thing, we are now in the times that health tips and useful information are easily accessed online.  Not only that, we can also avail of healthy deals with just a few clicks of the finger.  Have you heard about Healthy Deals PhilippinesHealthyDeals.ph, is the newest and only group-buying site in the Philippines that offers health and wellness deals, coupons and discounts exclusively.  It’s like I was browsing a mini health clinic online with the many products and services it offers.  The other good news is one can get quality and effective brands at less cost.

One product that caught my attention is the Glow Liniment and Glow rub that can be purchased at the discounted price of Php 60 each per bottle.  That’s 50% off from their original price.  I hate headache, stiff neck, back ache and muscle pain which is what Glow Liniment can take away from your body.  Glow rub is another pain killer that also helps better blood circulation.

This and other great health deals are available online at HealthyDeals.ph.

This is my entry to the What’s a Healthy Deal?” Bloggers’ Raffle Contest.

Did I say that health is wealth?

For more updates on products, events and promotions, kindly follow and like Healthy Deals Philippines’ Twitter account http://twitter.com/healthydeals_ph and HealthyDeals.ph Facebook page.

I need a DIVOOM DIVO boom on my desk

Funny but I just observed that my loudest “officemate” is actually one of the most unnoticed fellows in our workplace.

He’s tall, dark and kinda handsome but never receives the attention that many people who possess such adjectives are getting. Same goes with his identical twin brother. Yup, there are two of them who for almost three years have occupied one corner in my cubicle announcing news, playing music and even guided me from time to time how to properly pronounce a new word I just met. I am not talking about our HR guy, I am actually referring to my company-issued pair of speakers.

I don’t know why people would dance and sing along to the tune that I play but never pause for a while to check the speaker where the music is coming from. Or why others would listen attentively to breaking e-radio news but failed to commend the source of the clear broadcast sound. That’s why I call my pair the KSPeakers (sounds like the monicker that my wife used to call me when I was still courting her a few years ago).

But I want to say thank you, thank you (one each to the twin) dear speakers! I just hope you look a little different (even without the make-over I gave you) so then I will have the needed “attraction” in my cubicle.

How I wish I could have a Divoom Divo, one of the fanciest looking speakers today. I believe it is more than just a speaker because I can think of other use for it other than getting quality crisp audio.

1. It can be a boss pleaser. I don’t know with your supervisor but our office head will be delighted to see products like this speaker and I would not be surprise if one day he’ll ask about it. Because Divoom Divo looks like a head with headsets on, I think this is will hold his wig better than keeping it inside his attaché case.

2. It may give me a chance to be friends with our IT guy and even get access to Facebook and other restricted sites. You know how these people love high-tech gadgets and I’m sure they’ll be impress with Divoom Divo’s 2.1 speakers, deep bass from a long throw subwoofer and a “touch” control for volume using the “ears.”

3. Divoom Divo will be a good source of pick-up lines for any unsuspecting woman who will go inside my cubicle to check this one of a kind speaker on my desk. I can think one right now that goes, “Miss, ipinaglihi ka ba sa speaker? Anlakas kasi ng dating mo, eh.” (sobrang cheesy!)

4. And lastly, Divoom Divo is simply a joy to look at and can be a good stress buster by just staring at it. Imagine having a speaker with an unusual yet classy look with a quality comparable to other good 2.1 speakers.

Anyways, if you’re like me who wants to own this wonderful speaker, you can check Apple stores like A Shop (Podium and Eastwood) to have a better view of Divoom Divo which cost only P2,900.

For more updates on cool tech stuffs, promos and events, just “Like” the Facebook fan page of Divoom and Unbox. You can also visit www.unbox.ph for great online readings.

Do you carry a bag everyday?

Me, I've been a fan of backpacks ever since. Sometimes when I go out without a bag, I feel like there is something missing or I left an important back home. That's why, you'll more likely see me carrying a bag while watching a movie (if you can see me) or shopping in a mall.

Why I want to win an Air-con unit?

When my wife was still pregnant with our son, I wished that he would not get the three dreaded “H” that I posses--- “hika, hight (I’m just 5’3) and handsome-maangmukha”

A year later, we were blessed with a boy who has a face as cute as his mommy and he looks taller than the other babies in our place who are just the same age as he is. But the downside is, he has asthma.

Last December, we almost spent our son’s first-ever Christmas in the hospital due to pneumonia. It was a blessing that after 10 days of confinement, he was able to survive and we got our release slip on the 24th.

Until now, my son is taking some medications and maintenance to reduce his asthma attacks. The summer heat and wrath of El Niño also cause him to have a hard time breathing from time to time. So the doctor recommended that if possible, we should have an air-condition unit in our room.

And that’s the reason why I want to win the Gree air-conditioner courtesy of The E-zone. The money that we can save in buying a unit can be used for his other needs.

If we win, our home will surely be filled with hahahas, hehehes and hihihis!

Humor Me Makoy Contest

This is my entry to the Humor Me Makoy Contest. I have been following Makoy's blog because I like his writing style--- simple and with humor. Last year, Makoy posted a funny entry on how he celebrated his birthday. Check out Not So Lonely Birthday and it will definitely make you smile. My favorite part is when he mentioned that he had miswa that day. At least it's still noodles. So Pinoy! Ankulet! Just like my Nanay who never forget to remind us to cook something pansit or spaghetti on our birthday! Hmmm...Maybe that's one of the secret of Makoy and his blogs' longevity? :-)

His post also reminded me of a funny incident that happened more than a decade ago. My friend asked me for gift suggestions for the father of his girlfriend who lives in the province. He plans to go with his GF to visit her father but he wants to buy the old man a gift so their first meeting would start on a good note.

I told my friend to buy something that his future father-in-law can use. He agreed with the idea and called up his GF to ask what her father do for a living. We were in a mall that time and he was having little trouble talking to her over the phone. But my friend was able to hear that her father was a carpenter. So, he bought a new set of chisels, hammer and a saw from a hardware store and wrapped 'em in a big box sealed with a kiss.

A week later, I received a text message from my friend. He texted that although the old man finds his gifts useful, he can't use any of 'em at work since he is a Car Painter and not a Carpenter.

Choose and win what you want at Animetric’s World

When was the last time you felt that you’re in a place where you are surrounded with a lot of things that you wanna have?

Hmm… actually, just last week when I found myself “trapped” inside a toy shop. I again got into the same dilemma when I checked the anniversary promo of Animetric’s World. She has ons of great prizes for people who can best convince her that they deserve to win. It’s like choose and win what you want!

She has a set of Yummy cookbooks which I really need so I can finally cook adobo without ending up with lechon kawali.

But I also want to win the Neutregena Wave Starter Kit so I can have an oil-free face that looks better than my version of adobong baboy. Or maybe a bottle of Celeteque Advance to make me look younger so people will stop describing my relationship with my wife as a May-December affair. People…I’m just 4 years older than her.

A pair of VNC shoes would be a perfect gift to my wife on her birthday this coming April since one of her missions in life is to take a crack at Imelda Marcos' record. Well, I can also give her a pair of Havainas Slims for a planned summer trip in Aklan. Havainas and Boracay will be a great combo.

I haven’t been to Ace water Spa and I want to experience the great things I’ve read and heard about this water wonderland and massage center. And it will be a blast if I can bring my wife with me to enjoy such first time.

Last but certainly as fabulous as the other prizes is a Starbucks Clean and Green tumbler. I really want to get one of the pair Animetric is giving away. I plan to give it to our office messenger who has been very accommodating every time I asked him to pick-up my prizes courtesy of the promos that I joined.

So many prizes to choose from but I’m sure there are a lot of fellow followers of this blog who are also eyeing for the treat that they want.

Who will win what is Animetric’s last say. The name of the game is to make her give in to your plea :-)

Congratulations to Animetric and more power!

Real Leaf Paparazzi

No matter how bad my day at the office goes, I always go home smiling.

Well, in about 45 minutes, I’ll finally see my son Charles whose been waiting for me in the last 8 hours. Oh, and also my wife. Sorry Leah, I almost forgot you ;-)

Going home in the last 10 months has never been this exciting since our little one came to our lives. Every day, I always imagine how I would enter our house and surprise him. Sometimes, I’d sneak in and mimic Elmo, Winnie the Pooh or Goofy until Charles finds where I’m hiding. There were also times that he is already asleep when I come home so I’ll just stare at him for hours or kiss his cheeks from time to time.

One day, I came home with a couple of “pasalubong” for my wife --- her favorites (1) oatmeal cookies from a popular coffee shop and (2) a bottle of Real Leaf Green Tea.

My wife and son were playing in our bedroom when I came home. Leah already got a few bites of cookies and was about to drink her green tea but Charles was egging for the bottle of Real Leaf. Leah just took a few sips and closed the cap and let Charles hold the bottle. In the next 30 minutes, my wife and baby played with it and I can’t help but take some snap shots of this quite amusing moment.

These photos only show how amazing parenthood can be. Fun moments can start from scratch and become a memorable moment. For our scrap book, I’ll label these as Real Life with Real Leaf.

Win Hannah Montana Premium Items

I know that not everyone are Hannah Montana fans, but i think you don't mind winning HM caps and notebooks by just answering a simple question. Then give it to a HM or Miley Cyrus that you know. I'm sure you won't have a hard time looking for one. Just ask your niece or daughter. You have until July 8 to send in your answers.

Here's the question, that could have originated from Tennessee, posted in last Sunday's issue of Junior Inquirer: What is Miley Stewart's home state?

Send in your answer to ji@inquirer.com.ph with your complete name, address, age and contact information. Don't forget to write Hannah Montana on the subject line. Winners will be published on July 12.

Win Ice Age 3 Premium Items

For fans of the Ice Age animated series, young ones and young at heart alike, here's a promo that I saw from Junior Inquirer last Sunday. The promo runs until July 8.

All you need to do is to answer this dinosaur of a question: In Ice Age 3, what extinct creatures will the Ice Age gang face?

Simply e-mail your answers to ji@inquirer.com.ph with your complete name, age, address and contact information with ICE AGE 3 on the subject line.

Winners will be published on the July 12 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Ask your kid sister or brother, niece or nephew, son or daughter or apos to win these great prizes for you!
